Garden Sheds – 5 Things to Consider Before Buying

By MJ Marks

As a home owner, you eventually reach a point in your life when garden sheds really start to sound like a smart investment. It is usually when you can't find your garden tools because there is too much stuff in your garage, or you simply have nowhere to put your lawnmower. But realizing that you need a shed is only the first step, deciding exactly what you want and need is the next step and there are a myriad of different garden sheds available. Here is a list of things to consider when you are shopping for your perfect shed.

  1. Money. How much do you have to spend? First things first, no use shopping outside of your budget. Once you know how much you want to spend, then you can look at the other considerations with an eye towards what is realistic.
  2. Material. What do you want your shed made out of? There are three main options available for garden sheds: wood, metal or vinyl. I always like the look of a nice cedar shed, but that is probably because I live out in the country and cedar is more natural. You can also get wood sheds painted in a variety of colors. Metal sheds often look a bit more utilitarian, but you usually get more bang for your buck. One benefit of vinyl sheds is the ease to take care of them.
  3. Size. Just how big of a shed do you need? You can get from really small garden sheds that just fit your tools - no large equipment. You would need something a bit bigger if you have a push mower, and larger yet if you have a riding mower. Larger garden sheds obviously cost more, but make sure that you get the right size the first time around, or you end up spending even more a few years down the road when you need to purchase a second shed or up grade to a bigger one altogether. My advice, figure out what you will be putting in the shed, choose the size you will need and then go one bigger!
  4. Style. For some, style is important, for others, they could care less what their garden shed looks like. Perhaps, the location of your shed will determine the importance of its style. You can get gable style sheds, gambrel barn style garden sheds, saltbox styles, and on and on. Many of the wood sheds are trimmed in white. Besides the look, do you want windows? Do you want the door on the short or the long side of the shed? It is good to keep these things in mind while shopping around.
  5. Accessories. Does everything come with the shed, or do you have to purchase additional items to set it up? Different brands and companies ship their garden sheds in different ways, sometimes everything you need is included with the shed, other times there are additional items that MUST be purchased before setting up the shed. Additional needed items can include foundation kits, floor kits, and concrete anchor kits.
There may be some additional accessories that you want to make your shed more user friendly. Some possible options can include special tool racks or hooks to hang your tools on the wall, a workbench or shelves.

So, when you are looking at garden sheds, remember to consider everything so that you can choose the shed that will work best for you.
